A painted picture of perfection
Despite their energy and playful nature, the African wild dog population is declining. There’s less than 6600 left in the wild, and it’s still decreasing today. They’re one of the most endangered mammals on the planet, under threat from a shrinking habitat and encroaching disease – and they need our help.

The African wild dog is a distinctive member of Africa’s diverse fauna. Known as the ‘painted wolf’, they have a unique mottled coat and large, curious ears. Where once they resided in no less than 39 sub-Saharan African countries, today they occupy just 15. As highly effective predators, they play a key role in regulating certain species, which in turn shapes Africa’s diverse fauna. And let’s face it, they’re very, very cute.
Unusual facts
- African wild dogs are one of the few species that care for injured or elderly members of their pack. They will clean wounds, guard them and even regurgitate food for them!
- African wild dogs are nomadic, rarely staying in one place for too long. They have even been known to travel up to 50 kilometres in one day. Road trip!
- Dog eat dog world? Not for these pups. As soon as a new litter is born, their care takes priority over the rest of the pack — even the alphas! They are given first dibs on any hunt, and they rarely fight amongst themselves for food.
- The alpha pair in a pack of wild dogs sometimes adopt pups from other beta couples, and stay monogamous throughout their lives. #relationshipgoals.
