Meet the Dama Gazelle

Scientific Name: Nanger dama

Also known as: Mhorr gazelle, addra gazelle, Nanger, Red-necked Gazelle, Ril

Type: Mammal

Diet: Herbivore

Status: Critically endangered

Population: Less than 500, recent figures even suggest as low as 300

Habitat: Savannah and sub-desert

Location: the Saharan desert and the Sahel, Africa

Threats:

• Overhunting and illegal poaching
• Habitat loss due to domestic livestock nabbing all of the space and food 

The Dama gazelle is a hardy chap and has learnt to adapt to its desert-y surroundings. They can get by without having to drink for long periods, and will get the water they need from the food they eat, like desert grass and shrubs. They also migrate seasonally to look for enough vegetation and water to survive – it’s a hard life, but the Dama gazelle just cracks on. And at least they’ve got their mates – they normally hang out in herds of 10-20, so there’s always someone to chat to. 

Unusual facts

1. Flirty ‘pronking’ – a stiff-legged jump – is done by male Dama gazelles as a sign of dominance and to attract the ladies. Sexy.
2. Once a Dama gazelle calf is born, it only takes a few wobbly days to become a pro at walking and running, and can soon keep up with its mother. This is much needed, as pretty much everything eats the Dama gazelle, from cheetahs to pythons to humans. Poor Dama gazelle. 
3. According to recent studies, Dama gazelles shrink their hearts and livers in cases of extreme heat. Bit gross, but if it works, it works! #survivalhack
4. Dama gazelle mamas are very protective, and will pair up with other mothers to defend their young against jackals – even if it means chasing and attacking the predator. You go, Dama mama!
