    Description

Never see these little faces again? Heck no!

The red panda is about the size of a domestic cat and though once thought to belong to the bear family, it has been found to classify as part of its own unique clan — making them pretty damn special. But with only 10,000 left in the wild due to destruction of habitat and the threat of poachers, red panda sightings are few and far between.

Let’s change that. Buy one of our animal print t-shirts and 50% of the proceeds will go to help these endangered critters. How? We’ll donate it to the Red Panda Network, a charity dedicated to the survival and preservation of the majestic red panda. How’s that for eco-friendly fashion?

    Meet The Red Panda

    Scientific Name: Ailurus fulgens

Also Known As: Lesser panda, red bear-cat, red cat-bear, firefox, first panda

    Type: Mammal

    Diet: Herbivore

    Status: Endangered

    Population: Fewer than 10,000

    Habitat: Temperate Forests

    Location: Eastern Himalayas

    Threats:

    • Deforestation in the region
    • Hunting traps
    • Poaching

The red panda is something of a VIP in the wildlife world. They are the only species of their kind on the planet and, aside from being downright adorable, they’re also crucial for conservationists. Why? The red panda is an indicator species in the Eastern Himalayan Broadleaf forest. That essentially means that if they’re doing well, then the overall environment is doing well too. So with less than 10,000 left in the wild, it’s not looking good…

    Facts for your friends

    1. Red pandas have a thumb! But don’t worry, share the giant panda’s pseudo-thumb, a modified wrist bone used to grasp bamboo when feeding.
    2. The Mozilla Firefox logo is a red panda (also known as a firefox… get it?). Who knew?! They even adopted some a few years back.
    3. In very cold temperatures, red pandas can become dormant, lowering their metabolic rate and raising it every few hours as they wake up to look for food.
    4. Red pandas are the only living member of the animal family Ailuridae.
