Meet the Bluefin Tuna
Scientific Name: Thunnus thynnus
Also Known As: Northern bluefin, Atlantic bluefin, giant bluefin, tunny
Type: Fish
Diet: Carnivorous
Status: Endangered
Population: Exact population unknown
Habitat: Seas and oceans around the world
Location: Atlantic Ocean, Gulf of Mexico, Mediterranean Sea
Threats:
- Overfishing and illegal fishing
Don’t let their big size fool you: bluefin tuna are one of the fastest marine creatures around, reaching speeds of up to 40mph. But even at those speeds they can’t outswim the fishing industry. Since they first started being fished commercially, the population of the the Atlantic bluefin tuna has dropped by an alarming 85% — and it shows no sign of stopping. As the apex predator in the marine food chain, bluefin tuna play a vital role in keeping our oceans in check, which is a concern for us all.
Unusual facts
- Bluefin tuna are basically aquatic Transformers — to reduce drag as they speed through the sea, they retract their dorsal and pectoral fins. Auto-bluefins, roll out!
- Living on a diet of small fish, squid, crustaceans, eels, kelp, and zooplankton, bluefin tuna can reach enormous sizes. The largest one ever caught weighed 1496 lbs.
- Bluefin tuna are a popular delicacy for high-end sushi lovers, and in 2013 a Japanese restaurant owner paid a whopping $1.76 million for a single fish.
- Metallic blue on top and silver on the bottom, their skin serves as the perfect camouflage against predators.
Meet the Pew Charitable Trusts
The Pew Charitable Trusts isn’t your usual conservation charity. They’re not dedicated to just one animal, or even one cause. Instead, they have a range of projects, ranging from biomedical research to student debt initiatives. One of their many great causes is their Bringing Bluefin Back campaign, through which they conduct research and campaign for more sustainable commercial fishing laws.
We believe the PCT are doing great work, and we want to support that. So when you buy a responsibly-sourced bluefin tuna t-shirt today, BEAST.boutique will donate 50% of the profits to the PCT to help them continue their great work. Buy your t-shirt today and help us save the bluefin tuna!
