Blue whales are the big beautiful guardians of the ocean. They play a huge part in regulating their ecosystem, from keeping krill populations in check to providing food for other animals when they become carrion. But don’t take our word for it! If you need reminding just how cool the blue whale is, let David Attenborough do it for you:
Facts for your friends
- Everytime a blue whale does a poo, its neighbours rejoice. Why? Whale waste releases nitrogen, which in turn fertilises the water for other species such as plankton. Lovely.
- Blue whales are the largest animals to have ever lived on earth (but if they ask, tell them they’re perfect just the way they are).
- They’ve got big hearts — literally — with some weighing as much as a car. If that’s not enough, their tongues can weigh as much as an elephant. Imagine how quickly they go through ice creams!
- Blue whales have become such VIPs in conservation efforts that a skeleton of one replaced that of “Dippy” the diplodocus in the Natural History Museum. Its name, rather aptly, is “Hope”.
Meet The Whale and Dolphin Conservation
The WDC is dedicated to working for the protection of whales and dolphins all over the globe. They help with habitat conflicts in the region and raising awareness through education. The WDC work to end dolphin hunts, stop needless bycatch and clamp down on whaling, which causes the deaths of 2000 whales every year.
You can help them by donating, and your contribution will go towards satellite tracking efforts to help them monitor blue whale populations, as well as raising awareness of their plight.
Buy our blue whale animal t-shirt today and 50% will go straight to the WDC to help protect the graceful giants of the sea.
