Meet Meet The Saola
Scientific Name: Pseudoryx nghetinhensis
Also Known As: Asian unicorn, siola, Vu Quang ox, spindlehorn
Type: Mammal
Diet: Herbivore
Status: Critically endangered
Population: Estimated between 70 and 700
Habitat: Evergreen forests with minimal or no dry season
Location: Annamite Mountains of Vietnam and Laos
Threats:
- Loss of habitat due to agricultural expansion and infrastructure
- Hunting and the illegal wildlife trade
Saola might be the most unique and interesting animal you’ll find on our ethical tees. Their existence wasn’t known until as late as 1992, when a survey carried out by the Ministry of Forestry of Vietnam and WWF discovered a skull with unusually long and straight horns in the home of a local hunter. They ended up being the first new large mammal discovered in more than 50 years!
Facts for your friends:
- Shy or just sensible? The saola has only been categorically seen in the wild four times to date.
- It is so rarely seen in the wild that it has earned itself the (very apt) nickname of the Asian unicorn.
- Saola is a Vietnamese name, literally meaning “spindle horns” (but we prefer the Asian unicorn still!)
- Saola have large maxillary glands their muzzle. These are used to expel nitrogenous waste from the body such as urea, and scientists believe saola uses these to mark territory or attract mates. We wouldn’t recommend expelling nitrogenous waste on your next Tinder date though…
Meet Save The Saola
Save The Saola isn’t just one charity: they’re comprised of 19 member organisations, ranging from governmental groups to dedicated conservation efforts. This means they’re firing on all cylinders when it comes to fighting for the saola’s future. As well as coordinating efforts to protect the Asian unicorn in its natural habitat, they are also working to preserve the Annamite Mountains themselves as a region of global significance.
Want to get in on this? Buy our beautiful saola animal print tee today, and we’ll donate 50% of the profits to Save The Soala. You get a cool t-shirt, and they get a future. Not bad, huh?
