A world without a porpoise is a world without a purpose

With a smile to melt even the stoniest heart, the finless porpoise is the darling of China — and for good reason. But these pint-sized creatures are under threat. With as little as 1000 left in the Yangtze river, they need our help.

Porpoise nuts will adore this conservation-friendly classic heavyweight tee, featuring a bold geometric porpoise design printed onto 100% organic cotton.

Perfect for the wild, adventurous, nature-loving explorer, our responsibly sourced, vegan-friendly finless porpoise t-shirts are more than just a fashion statement – they do some real-world good as well. 50% of the profits from this finless porpoise eco tee go straight to the Porpoise Conservation Society, who provide education and research to support the future of these curious creatures.

    Playful and curious

The finless porpoise used to share the Yangtze river with its cousin, the Baiji dolphin. However, in 2006 it was announced that the latter was extinct. Now alone in Asia’s longest river, the finless porpoise faces the same fate. Under threat from pollution, ship collisions and a reduced food supply due to overfishing, their numbers are rapidly decreasing.

    Meet the Finless Porpoise

    Scientific Name: Neophocaena phocaenoides

Also Known As: Sanggwaengi, jiangtun, sunameri

    Type: Mammal

    Diet: Carnivorous

    Status: Critically endangered

    Population: 1000-1800

    Habitat: Seas and rivers

Location: Coastal waters of Asia, especially the Yangtze river

    Primary threats:

    • Reduced food supply from overfishing
    • Ship collisions and bycatch
    • Pollution

They might be finless, but purposeless they ain’t. These mischievous cuties play a vital role, both in their ecosystem and in local tourism. Danger faces them on all sides, from collisions with vast container ships to the illegal but still practiced electrofishing. Only through better education, continued pressure on fishing companies and the creation of better habitats can we protect the finless porpoise.

    Unusual facts

    1. Ugly duckling? The finless porpoise is born black, but develops its greyish skin as it matures.
    2. Their intelligence is roughly the same as that of a gorilla, so significantly higher than the guy you shared a desk with in year 7 maths.
    3. As the name suggests, the finless porpoises has no dorsal fin. This lets the females carry their young on their back, in what we assume/hope scientists are calling a porpoise papoose.
    4. The Chinese term for the finless porpoise, jiangzhu, literally means “river pig”. Bit harsh.

    Meet the Porpoise Conservation Society
