A national icon of strength and beauty
With less than 300 left in the wild, the Malayan Tiger was classified as critically endangered in 2015. Despite being the national animal of Malaysia, these beautiful tigers are under threat as a result of local agriculture, development projects, and poaching. There are currently fewer than two Malayan tigers for every 100 km² of Malaysian rainforest.

Primary threats:
- Loss of habitat due to deforestation
- Killing by humans as retaliation for loss of livestock

Elvis famously didn’t want to be a tiger, because tigers play too rough. But if you were facing the challenges that the Malayan tiger is facing today, you would too. Rampant and unchecked deforestation has virtually all but destroyed their natural habitat, reducing their numbers to less than 350 – a staggering figure.
Unusual facts
- The Malayan Tiger’s scientific name, Panthera tigris jacksoni, was given as a tribute to renowned tiger conservationist Peter Jackson. We checked, and he doesn’t moonlight as a famous film director. Trust us.
- Like a big furry snowflake, the stripes of no two tigers are alike.
- Malayan tigers can reach speeds of up to 40 miles an hour – but only in short bursts. So if you’re being chased, that’s good to know!
