Meet The Sumatran Elephant
Scientific Name: Elephas maximus sumatranus
Also Known As: African savanna elephant, African bush elephant
Type: Mammal
Diet: Herbivore
Status: Critically endangered
Population: 2,400 – 2,800
Habitat: Broadleaf tropical forests
Location: the Indonesian island of Sumatra
Threats:
- Lost of habitat due deforestation and agriculture
- Retaliatory killings by humans
- Poaching for the illegal ivory trade
The Sumatran elephant’s status changed in 2012 from ‘endangered’ to ‘critically endangered’. Why? Because a staggering half of their population was lost in a single generation due to habitat loss and the resulting conflict with humans. Despite this conflict, these creatures remain a vital part of their ecosystem, acting as accidental gardeners by dispersing seeds from the flora that surrounds them. In fact, some trees rely solely on these gorgeous grey groundskeepers for this purpose.
Facts for your friends
- If female Sumatran elephants had the internet they’d be Facebook fiends — they’re super sociable! Females travel together and look after one another, while male elephants tend to go it alone.
- Don’t ask them to go trampolining with you — they’re the only mammal that can’t jump.
- Elephants are secret ninjas. Their feet are softly padded, which not only holds their weight and stops them from slipping, but also mutes their footsteps when they walk.
- Tusk-idextrous? Nope! Elephants prefer using one tusk over the other, just as humans do with their hands.
Meet The Save Indonesian Endangered Species Fund
The Save Indonesian Endangered Species Fund was set up in 2006 by veterinarian Dr Claire Oelrichs. They are staffed entirely by volunteers, with 100% of every donation going straight towards the various conservation projects they have implemented. One such campaign is Better Lives For Elephants, a movement that deters elephants from encroaching on farms and by closing abandoned wells that baby elephants can get stuck in.
Want to help the SIES Fund keep doing their great work? Buy our ethical animal print tee today, and 50% will go towards keeping the Sumatran elephant happy, safe, and smiling.
