Population: Estimated 4,080-6,590

- Retaliatory killings by local farmers
- Loss of habitat due to farming expansion and climate change
Snow leopards have climbed the high, cold mountains of the planet for at least 2-3 million years, and are one of the most powerful big cats out there. They play a crucial role in their ecosystem, serving as the top dog (cat?) in their food chain, as well as serving as an indicator of their habitat as a whole. Essentially, if there’s a lot of snow leopards, then things are good. So as their population dwindles, we all need to be worried…
Facts for your friends:
- Snow leopards don’t need to invest in snow boots every year: they have big furry paws that serve to spread their weight evenly in the soft snow. Their paws also help muffle their movement when they’re hunting.
- Locals call the snow leopard the ‘ghosts of the mountains’ because they are so rarely seen in the wild.
- Snow leopards are hugely symbolic for Turkic peoples of Central Asia. They appear on banknotes, city seals, and on the Snow Leopard award, given to mountaineers who climbed all five of the former Soviet Union’s peaks.
- Unusually for big cats, they have pale green or grey eyes, making them look a bit like David Bowie in feline form!
Meet the Snow Leopard Trust
The Snow Leopard Trust operates in five countries that hold over 75% of the planet’s population of these beautiful big cats. One of the major threats to snow leopards is from livestock farmers who kill them as they try to attack their herd. The Snow Leopard Trust’s conservation programs provide incentives for local farmers to protect the snow leopard rather than killing them on sight. It’s this sustainable approach to snow leopard conservation that makes the Trust the perfect charity for us to donate 50% of the proceeds of our organic animal print tee to. An ethical t-shirt for an ethical charity — makes sense!
Buy our responsibly-sourced snow leopard t-shirt today, and help us secure a future for the beautiful big cats of the mountains.
