Scientific Name: Mustela nigripes

Also Known As: American polecat, prairie dog hunter

Type: Mammal

Diet: Carnivorous

Status: Endangered

Population: Around 300

Habitat: Prairies, grasslands, steppes

Location: North America

Threats:

• Loss of habitat due to agriculture
• Hunting and poisoning of prairie dogs, the ferret’s main source of food

The black-footed ferret is, aside from being as cute as a button, a key indicator of a healthy, happy ecosystem. Like adorable groundskeepers, they help maintain prairie dog populations, as well as being a source of sustenance for predators such as badgers, owls and coyotes. As predator and prey, they play a key role in North America’s biodiversity.

Facts for your friends

1. Black-footed ferrets can be recognised by their dark fur around their eyes, giving them the appearance of wearing a mask (and also a ready-made Zorro costume for their fancy dress parties).
2. While usually not bothered by the weather, some black-footed ferrets may stay inside their burrows for up to six days at a time during winter. It’s not confirmed whether they binge-watch Netflix and drink hot chocolate though.
3. They can travel as far as 10 miles in one day, which for a six-inch critter like them is pretty impressive
