A painted picture of perfection
Despite their delicate build, monarch butterflies are one of the hardest-working creatures out there, especially when it comes to their migratory habits. They often travel between 1,200 and 2,800 miles around the Americas, from high mountains to lush forests. However, as their habitats are becoming increasingly scarce, their populations are falling — it’s time for us to step in.

Meet the Monarch Butterfly
Scientific Name: Danaus plexippus
Also Known As: common tiger, milkweed, wanderer, black veined brown
Type: Insect
Diet: Herbivorous
Status: Endangered
Population: Unknown
Habitat: Mountains and forests
Location: USA, Mexico, International Space Station
Threats:
- Lost of habitat due to human expansion and herbicide use
- Disruption of migration pattern due to climate change
You won’t forget the monarch butterfly in a hurry. Its intricate pattern and delicate wings make it a striking member of the butterfly family. Indeed, that’s the point — those gorgeous wings let predators know that they can look, but not touch. Starting life as beautiful orange, black, and white caterpillars, monarch butterflies transform into hardy creatures that can travel thousands of miles without a second thought.
Unusual facts
- Don’t know your male monarch butterfly from your female? No sweat — males have a distinctive black spot inside its hind wing. Although how you’d spot that in a dark nightclub is anyone’s guess.
- Monarch butterflies can see a wide spectrum of colours, including UV light. That’s probably how they can see that black spot at raves…
- Monarch butterflies aren’t born poisonous — they earn it. As caterpillars, they feed primarily on milkweed, a poisonous plant that is dangerous for other creatures. But the toxins stay in the little critters even once they’ve transformed into butterflies, making them deadly to predators. Sneaky!
- Monarchs in space! In 2009, monarch butterflies were taken on a VIP (albeit one-way) trip to the International Space Station for breeding. Unfortunately they were only expected to live for four days, which is barely enough time to do some sightseeing if we’re being honest.
