Description
You say blubbery, we say beautiful. The Pacific walrus is a magnificent beast – enormous and slightly ungainly on land, the walrus transforms into a graceful smooth-mover once underwater. Their iconic tusks and stiff bristly moustaches mean they’re distinctive and captivating.
50% of the profits from this organic, vegan T-shirt featuring our Pacific walrus geometric design goes to Ocean Conservancy’s ‘Protecting the Arctic’ program. They work in the US to help make sure that Arctic waters remain clean and healthy, and that Arctic marine wildlife like Pacific walruses are protected. So when you buy one of our t-shirts, you’re helping to keep the Pacific walrus population afloat (sorry) and looking trendy at the same time.

Meet the Pacific Walrus
Scientific Name: Odobenus rosmarus
Also known as: the ‘tooth-walking sea-horse’
Type: Mammal
Diet: Omnivore
Status: Vulnerable
Population: Approximately 200,000+
Habitat: Coastal ocean
Location: Around Alaska and north-east Russia

IUCN Number:
Threats:
- The main threat to walruses is climate change – loss of sea ice means mothers and calves cannot rest, and leads to overcrowding and deadly stampedes onshore
- Human disturbance – oil and gas development reduces habitat, increases risk of oil spills and other pollutants
The Pacific walrus is a sociable creature, and loves nothing more than just hanging out with its friends in the Arctic Circle. Unless it’s mating season, and then it’s every man for himself, buddy. At this point, everyone gets super aggy, and fights will break out all over the walrus colony resulting in absolute chaos.
Unusual facts
- The tusks of a walrus can reach a whopping 1 meter long! Tusks are used for all sorts of things including fighting, and keeping breathing holes in the ice open. Walruses also use their tusks to haul themselves out of the water and to stop themselves from floating away while they sleep. Talk about multi-functional.
- Walruses have a large air sac in their throat called a ‘pharyngeal pouch’. This is for buoyancy purposes, as it helps keep their head effortlessly above water as they’re bobbing along. It helps with all sort of things, from nursing, to sleeping to mating. Imagine having your own built-in rubber arm bands – how handy!
- The name ‘walrus’ is thought to come from the Old Norse word meaning ‘horse-whale’. Not super-inventive if you ask me, but it’s fairly accurate and I’m sure the walruses don’t mind.
- Walruses use their whiskers – known as ‘vibrissae’ – to detect their food (usually some sort of shellfish) in the dark depths of the ocean. The vibrissae are so sensitive that they can even detect shapes as small as 3mm thick and 2mm wide. Those poor sea cucumbers don’t stand a chance.
Meet Ocean Conservancy
Ocean Conservancy is a non-profit environmental advocacy group fighting to help protect wildlife in the ocean. Their ‘Protecting the Arctic’ program works in the US and across the Arctic to educate and advocate science-based solutions to ensure that Arctic waters remain clean and healthy. This in turn helps Pacific walruses to carry on about their lives, free from the harm and disturbance that oil-drilling and shipping will cause. Check out their website to read more and donate.
