Bright eyes
The chimpanzee is a cultural staple in countries across the world. From the creation myth of Cameroon’s Bulu tribe to PG Tips’ chimpanzee family, they hold a place in all our hearts. However, this hasn’t been enough to protect them from human activities encroaching on their habitat and lives. Logging and farming has destroyed up to 17% of their natural habitat, a figure that is only set to rise. Add to that the threat of poaching for their premium meat, and the future doesn’t look bright for the common chimpanzee.

Meet the chimpanzee
Scientific Name: Pan troglodytes
Also Known As: Robust chimpanzee
Type: Mammal
Diet: Omnivorous
Status: Endangered
Population: 172,700 to 299,700
Habitat: Forests, grasslands, savannahs
Location: Southern Senegal, forests north of the Congo, Western Uganda, Western Tanzania
Primary threats:
- Loss of habitat from agriculture, logging, and development
- Poaching for bushmeat
Chimps have a reputation for being leisurely animals (at least, they enjoy a good tea party), but they actually play a crucial role in the ecosystem. Wandering through the forest and grazing on fruit, they spread the seeds from their leftovers, helping to grow their environment and facilitate biodiversity. And it’s not just their habitat either — chimpanzees have been known to help human communities as well, alerting farmers when their cows are due to give birth. Such a unique and intelligent species deserves our help to give them the future they need.
Unusual facts
- Chimpanzees share an incredible 96% of human DNA. That’s no excuse to start dragging your knuckles and throwing your faeces though.
- As if that’s not enough, some chimpanzees have also been known to learn basic human sign language, and even combined words to create new meanings. Seeing as we struggle with that after a heavy night, that’s impressive.
- Some evidence has shown that chimps are able to identify plants that aid with stomach problems, choosing medicinal flora when they’re ill. Plus it’s cheaper than Gaviscon!
- Chimpanzees are one of the few animals on earth that can recognise themselves in a mirror. Why do you think they look so fly all the time?
