Description
What’s not to love about the black spider monkey? Large soulful eyes, mini potbelly, covered in thick black fuzz… Dreamy. This great little guy just loves swinging around the rainforest canopy at heights of over 25 meters.
But black spider monkey numbers have fallen by an alarming 80% over just 45 years, which put this poor species straight onto the Endangered list with a status of ‘Vulnerable’. So we want to help.
We’ve pledged to donate 50% of the profits from each sale of this organic, vegan t-shirt featuring our geometric black spider monkey design towards People’s Trust For Endangered Species (PTES). PTES is an organisation focused on a variety of animal conservation, including the black spider monkey. They go above and beyond when it comes to helping the black spider monkey, and we want to help them go further.

Black spider monkeys may be tiny, but they make a huge difference to their ecosystems. These little guys are excellent seed dispersers due to the large distances they travel, and the vast amount of fruit they eat and then poop out (sorry). This helps to maintain forest areas. Basically, more spider monkeys mean more rainforest. And we need all the help we can get with the rainforest.
Unusual facts
- The black spider monkey has a long, prehensile tail which is used like a fifth limb. This helps the monkeys to balance, grasp onto branches and swing from tree to tree. Newborns also wrap their tails around their mothers to cling on better. Cuuuuuute.
- Unlike many other monkey species, the black spider monkey doesn’t have any thumbs. Instead, it’s got hook-like hands which help it to grip onto trees easily for climbing. Just don’t ask it to open any jars for you.
- During courtship, if a female black spider monkey is interested in the male that trying to chat her up, she’ll sit on his lap. What a flirt.
