Extinction for the orangutan is a very real threat

The Bornean orangutan’s future looks bleak. Sustained logging, mining and agricultural efforts have all but destroyed their habitat, with 59.6% of Borneo’s forests fit for them to live in in 2010. If that wasn’t enough, young orangutans are being kidnapped for the illegal wildlife trade. These babies are taken from their mothers and sold as pets, food, or even for bio-medical research.

    Meet the Bornean Orangutan

    Scientific name: Pongo pygmaeus

Also known as: People of the Forest

    Type: Mammal

    Diet: Omnivorous

    Status: Critically endangered

    Population: Around 104,700

Habitat: Rainforests and tropical forests, swamps and mountain forests

    Location: Borneo

    Primary threats:

    • Illegal or unsustainable logging and mining
    • Loss of habitat due to agriculture
    • Poaching and capture for the illegal pet trade

They might be the king of the swingers (and super smart to boot), but without our help these intelligent, curious creatures will become just a story for the children of the future. Despite their close relation to humans, we have reduced their population almost beyond salvation.

    Unusual facts

    1. Bornean orangutans use makeshift tools regularly. They use branches to test the depth of water, use leaves as umbrellas or napkins, and even use sticks in an attempt to catch fish. And to think we struggled to open the jam jar this morning…
    2. Lady orangutans give birth once every eight years, the longest birth interval of any land mammal. Babies stay with their mother for 6-7 years, after which they are ready to go out into the world on their own.
    3. Bornean orangutans share 97% of the same DNA as humans. Naturally this gives them a lot of human-like qualities, such as reasoning and problem-solving. So when you’re stuck on a puzzle, you know who to call.
    4. The similarities don’t stop there. Baby orangutans often cry and smile at their mothers. I’ll give you a second to get over how damn cute that is.

    Meet the Orangutan Foundation

The Orangutan Foundation is committed to preserving the orangutan, wherever it may be. They focus on the protection and rebuilding of their natural habitat through reforestation, as well as rescuing stranded orangutans from isolated or destroyed forests and bringing them back where they belong. They do some great work, and your purchase will go towards funding it, as well as helping raise awareness of the Bornean orangutan’s plight through education.

Treat yourself to a t-shirt today and treat an orangutan too, with 50% of the profits going directly to the Orangutan Foundation.
