Meet the Sea Otter
Scientific Name: Enhydra lutris
Also Known As: Southern sea otters, California sea otters
Type: Mammal
Diet: Carnivorous
Status: Endangered
Population: Around 3000
Habitat: Coastal waters
Location: Northern Pacific Ocean including Canada, Russia, Japan, California, Washington
Threats:
- Hunted heavily for the fur trade
Sea otters used to be a common sight in the coastal waters of the Pacific Ocean, with populations reaching as many as a million. But these gorgeous pups were hunted heavily for their fur between 1741 and 1911, reducing their population to just 2000. An international hunting ban and a concerted conservation effort led to their worldwide population increasing to 106,000. But despite this, there remain just 3000 in California, sadly keeping them on the endangered list.
Unusual facts
- Sea otters are one of the few mammals (other than our primate cousins) who use tools, often using small rocks to crack open a tasty clam.
- Unlike most other marine creatures, sea otters don’t have a layer of blubber to keep them warm. However, they do have the thickest fur in the animal kingdom. Cosy!
- Sea otters can hold their breath for up to 5 minutes, and can reach depths of 330ft. Keep an eye out for them at the next Olympics!
- When sea otters sleep, they have a seaweed slumber party by wrapping kelp around themselves in a group, known as a raft.
Meet the Sea Otter Foundation
The Sea Otter Foundation is the only charity committed solely to the protection of the sea otter. Sea otters play a vital role in our ecosystem, and the SOF recognises that. Conservation efforts include raising awareness of the sea otter plight through education, including an OtterCam that lets you watch these adorable critters in their natural habitat.
Buy a responsibly-sourced sea otter print t-shirt today, and BEAST.boutique will donate half of the proceeds to the Sea Otter Foundation to help them keep fighting the good fight.
