    Description

The Bengal tiger is a majestic creature – strong and beautiful, piercing eyes, distinctive orange coat and striking pattern… it’s no wonder it’s the national animal of India and Bangladesh. The tiger is a veritable celebrity there, and even features on Bangladeshi money bills. Wow, I feel so beige next to the Bengal tiger.

Basically, we’re big fans. In fact, a lot of people are, although not always for the right reasons. The poor Bengal tiger is often hunted illegally as a trophy or used in traditional folk medicine, which means with less than 4,000 left in the wild, it’s firmly on the Endangered list. We want to help put a stop to this – the world would be a far less colourful place without the Bengal tiger in it. That’s why we’re donating 50% of the profits from each sale of this organic, vegan T-shirt featuring our Bengal tiger geometric design to Save Tigers Now. Save Tigers Now are fighting to protect tiger populations in the wild, and we want to support their fantastic work.

    Meet The Bengal Tiger

    Scientific Name: Panthera tigris tigris

Also known as: Royal Bengal Tiger or Indian tiger

    Type: Mammal

    Diet: Carnivorous

    Status: Endangered

    Population:  Less than 4,000

Habitat: Tropical rainforests, grasslands and marshes

Location: Primarily India; smaller populations in Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, China and Myanmar

    WWF Number:

    IUCN Number:

    Threats:

    • Poaching – tigers are hunted as trophies, illegally traded as decorative objects, and body parts are used in traditional Chinese medicines
    • Loss of habitat due to deforestation, agriculture and road-building
    • Loss of natural prey – bengal tigers are having to compete with humans because of poaching deer and antelopes
    • Conflict with humans – loss of habit and prey means that tigers are coming into conflict with humans as they attack domestic animals (and sometimes even humans) for food. As a result, tigers are killed by farmers and villagers in retaliation.

A solitary creature, the Bengal tiger just likes chilling solo in the shade during the day (#lifegoals), and starts getting hangry around dusk or dawn (I think it’s my spirit animal). This is when you definitely want to get to a designated safe area… At 3 metres long, approximately 360kg in weight (which makes it the largest wild cat in the world), and a top speed of 65 km/h, a hungry, hunting tiger is not something you want to come across at night. And they can sneak up on you too… Tigers stalk their prey until they are ready to pounce, and then go for the neck. Eek.

    Unusual facts

    1. The Bengal tiger’s roar can be heard an impressive two miles away. Crikey!
    2. The stripey camouflage coat of these fantastic felines varies from tiger to tiger. Each animal has its own completely unique pattern that can be used to identify them – much like fingerprints in humans.
    3. At around a terrifying 4 inches long, the Bengal tiger’s canine teeth are the largest of any living cat on the planet. They also have retractable claws which are a similar size… So I’d strongly advise against trying to get a hug or a kiss from these cuddly-looking kitties.
